What are medical school interviews?

Almost all Universities offering a medical program in Australia (often titled Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor in Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery) require candidates to complete an Interview to be considered for competitive entry and enrolment into a medical program. These interviews may be considered in conjunction with the applicant’s performance in their previous study program: high school studies (e.g. ATAR) or undergraduate university studies (e.g. GPA), scores in aptitude tests (e.g. UCAT/GAMSAT/CASPer), and/or portfolio of experience.

The medical interview is often the final step in securing an offer to study medicine. As interviews are offered only once per year, it is crucial for candidates to perform well in their Interviews. Failure to train for these interviews can result in failure to secure competitive entry into a medical program and delaying medical studies by a further year.

The stakes are particularly high for postgraduate medical program applicants, as the bulk of the medical schools are grouped under the GEMSAS consortium (Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions) who assess the one interview for competitive entry across ten medical programs. A large portion of medical programs are offered at a postgraduate level and form the GEMSAS consortium, using this one interview system.
